Cooperative Effect in Carboxylic Acid Catalyzed Cellobiose Hydrolysis

چکیده
Introduction Since glucose can be converted readily into many useful compounds, efficient conversion of cellulose to this building block is important to successful utilization of biomass for large-scale fuels and chemicals production, The conversion of cellulose to glucose is catalyzed by acid and by glycosidase enzymes. In the general acid catalyzed reaction, it has been shown that the rate of hydrolysis of cellobiose (a model compound for cellulose) is proportional to the proton concentration. Thus, organic acids, being weaker than inorganic acids and possess higher pKa’s, are less effective catalysts.

Characterization of acid catalytic domains for cellulose hydrolysis and glucose degradation.
Cellulolytic enzymes consist of a catalytic domain, a linking peptide, and a binding domain. The paper describes research on carboxylic acids that have potential as catalytic domains for constructing organic macromolecules for use in cellulose hydrolysis that mimic the action of enzymes. The tested domains consist of the series of mono-, di-, and tricarboxylic acids with a range of pK(a)'s. Thi...
متن کاملAcid-catalyzed carboxylic acid esterification and ester hydrolysis mechanism: acylium ion as a sharing active intermediate via a spontaneous trimolecular reaction based on density functional theory calculation and supported by electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry.
By DFT calculation, we found that acid-catalyzed carboxylic acid esterification and ester hydrolysis are brief two-step reactions. First, the carboxylic acid hydroxyl-oxygen or ester alkyl-oxygen is protonated, which generates a highly active acylium ion. The protonation requires an activation energy (Ea) of 4-10 kcal mol(-1), and is the rate-controlling step of the esterification or hydrolysis...
متن کاملCharacterization of dicarboxylic acids for cellulose hydrolysis.
In this paper, we show that dilute maleic acid, a dicarboxylic acid, hydrolyzes cellobiose, the repeat unit of cellulose, and the microcrystalline cellulose Avicel as effectively as dilute sulfuric acid but with minimal glucose degradation. Maleic acid, superior to other carboxylic acids reported in this paper, gives higher yields of glucose that is more easily fermented as a result of lower co...
متن کاملMechanisms of lactone hydrolysis in neutral and alkaline conditions.
The neutral and base-catalyzed hydrolysis of nine carboxylic acid esters was studied using a hybrid supermolecule-PCM approach including six explicit water molecules. The molecules studied included two linear esters, four β-lactones, two γ-lactones, and one δ-lactone: ethyl acetate and methyl formate, β-propiolactone, β-butyrolactone, β-isovalerolactone, diketene (4-methyleneoxetan-2-one), γ-bu...
متن کاملEster hydrolysis by a cyclodextrin dimer catalyst with a metallophenanthroline linking group.
A novel beta-cyclodextrin dimer, 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dimethyl-bridged-bis(6-monoammonio-beta-cyclodextrin) (phenBisCD, L), was synthesized. Its zinc complex (ZnL) has been prepared, characterized, and applied as a new catalyst for diester hydrolysis. The formation constant (logK(ML)=9.56+/-0.01) of the complex and deprotonation constant (pK(a)=8.18+/-0.04) of the coordinated water molecule ...
